The goal of CERT is for professional emergency personnel to train members of the community in disaster response skills. When disasters strikes. emergency providers can become quickly overwhelmed. CERT personnel can assist in many aspects, such as sizing up a damaged area, basic search and rescue, medical triage, and basic fire supression. CERT teams can also free up emergency personnel for advanced fire suppression and medical treatment. In many cities, CERT programs have been integrated into the emergency operations procedures and play a vital and necessary role in disaster response.
CERT training covers disaster response skills such as fire safety, basic fire suppression, search and rescue, team organization, triage and basic medical skills. Training includes classroom education and field exercise to practice what you learn. Once basic training is completed, CERT teams have practice field drills and exercises designed to refresh their skills. Advanced training is also involved, which may include traffic management, storm watch, CPR, and basic and advanced first aid.
CERT programs are being set up by neighborhoods, businesses, churches, schools, clubs, and scouting organizations. Please look at the video below to see what CERT is all about.
