When a catastrophic disaster overwhelms normally available resources, response may be delayed for hours, or even days, leaving many citizens and neighborhoods cut off from outside help. In preparation for such a disastrous event, many Cities in Broward County have established Community Emergency Response Teams, also known as CERT.
These teams are trained by professional first responders, Firefighters, Paramedics, Police Officers, Emergency Management, and volunteers.
The CERT Concept
The CERT concept is based on the theory of neighbors helping neighbors. CERTs are a network of community teams trained by professionals to take care of themselves in the first days following a major disaster. With basic skills training, these teams will be able to prepare their homes and neighborhoods before the disaster, and immediately assist those in distress once the danger has passed.
Most CERT programs are approximately 20-hours in length. However, many Cities tailor their CERT programs to their needs. Successful completion of the program enhances the participant’s ability to recognize, respond to, and recover from a major disaster in their community.
The CERT Basic Training Program includes:

• Disaster Medical Operations
• Search and Rescue
• Disaster Hazard Mitigation
• Disaster Psychology
• Team Organization
• Terrorism Awareness
CERT empowers citizens to take control of their situations and lives, while promoting Camaraderie and the team approach to solving neighborhood problems.
Through pre-event pre-planning, citizens and the fire department can work together to help reduce injuries, loss of lives, and property damage.
